Suma Shirur’s Early Life and Career

Shirur began her athletic career at an young age. When she was just nine years old, she started running competitively. By the time she was 13, she had won her first medal in a national event. She continued to compete throughout her teenage years and into her twenties. In 1992, at the age of 23, Shirur made her Olympic debut.

Suma Shirur’s Early Life and Career

Suma Shirur was born on August 8th, 1969 in Pune, India. Growing up, she was always an active child and enjoyed playing sports. When she was just nine years old, she started running competitively and by 13 years old she had already won her first medal in a national event.

Shirur continued to compete throughout her teenage years and into her twenties. In 1992, at the age of 23, Shirur made her Olympic debut in Barcelona, Spain where she competed in the heptathlon. The following year she set a new Indian record in the pentathlon at the Asian Championships with a score of 4707 points.

In 1995, Shirur again set a new Indian record at the World Championships with a score of 4722 points which helped her qualify for the 1996 Summer Olympics where she would go on to finish 14th overall. After taking some time away from competition to start a family, Shirur returned to action in 1999 and went on to compete in both the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics before retiring from athletics in 2005.

Suma Shirur’s Retirement from Athletics


After a successful career as an athlete that spanned over two decades, Suma Shirur retired from athletics competition in 2005 at the age of 36 . Since retiring from competition , Shirur has remained involved with sports as a coach and motivational speaker . In 2017 , Shirumal Rajendran , President of Athletics Federation of India presented Suma Shirvakumar with Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to Indian athletics .
