Pep Guardiola Anticipates ‘Dream’ Derby Prep

In the lead-up to the much-anticipated Manchester derby, Pep Guardiola is relishing the luxury of four clear days for preparation, deeming it a “dream” scenario during this crucial stage of the season. Manchester City, under Guardiola’s helm, is gearing up to host arch-rivals United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in what could be a pivotal match in their pursuit of a fourth consecutive Premier League crown.

As City navigates through a pivotal month, facing title contenders Liverpool and Arsenal, along with the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie and an FA Cup quarter-final, Guardiola remains optimistic about the team’s readiness. Coming off a commanding 6-2 victory against Luton in the cup fifth round on Tuesday, Guardiola believes the intervening days have provided an ideal preparation window for the impending derby clash.

Ideal Preparation Amidst Intense Schedule

“Tuesday to Sunday is enough (time), it is a dream,” Guardiola expressed. “We will recover well. The problem is Saturday to Tuesday with trips, that is less recovery, but the players were extraordinary against Luton. We had two days off with rest, not seeing each other, and then two days to prepare for United.”

Despite the relentless schedule and minimal opportunities for rest, Guardiola acknowledges the intensity of this period as something he relishes the most. Emphasizing the significance of facing United, qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals, and pursuing further success in the FA Cup, Guardiola reflects on the team’s collective efforts throughout the season.

Appreciation for Challenging Moments

“Absolutely, (these periods) are the best. How nice. I prefer that than the opposite. It is so nice to have this fixture against United, to have the chance to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, then we have Anfield and then before the international break we have the chance against Newcastle to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup. We worked so hard since we arrived here to live these kind of moments.”

United’s Challenges and Guardiola’s Respect

In contrast, Manchester United’s form this season has been inconsistent, facing difficulties in maintaining momentum and securing a top-four finish. Guardiola, respectful of United as an institution, refrains from offering opinions on their struggles. When questioned about United’s manager, Erik ten Hag’s future, Guardiola remains tight-lipped, highlighting his utmost respect for the club and its players.

“I expect the best from United, but I don’t talk a word about what they do because I respect them too much, and I don’t want my words to be misunderstood. When I make comments, people always say, ‘Pep jibe,’ and it’s never my intention. That’s why it is better I don’t say anything. I have a lot of respect for the institution, United, and the players and Erik, and when I see what we have to do, my players will know it.”

Intense Anticipation for Derby Day

As the derby day approaches, Guardiola’s focus remains on the preparation and the challenges that lie ahead. The clash against United not only holds immense significance in the title race but also serves as a testament to City’s enduring pursuit of success under Guardiola’s leadership.
