Ganguly Urges Focus on First-Class Cricket

In a surprising move, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has terminated the central contracts of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. Notably absent from the recently announced list, the decision has raised eyebrows across the cricketing fraternity.

Former BCCI president and India captain, Sourav Ganguly, believes the players’ reluctance to engage in domestic cricket might be the catalyst for this drastic decision. Ganguly emphasized the significance of first-class cricket, stating, “Players must play first-class cricket. That’s the basic basis of cricket in this country.”

Ganguly’s Concerns

Expressing his astonishment at the absence of Shreyas Iyer in the Ranji Trophy, Ganguly commented, “I’m surprised why Shreyas Iyer hasn’t played Ranji Trophy. It’s a premier tournament, and you’re supposed to play.” He further urged players to honor their contracts and prioritize first-class cricket, the foundation of the sport in India.

While Shreyas Iyer is set to feature in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2024 semifinal against Tamil Nadu, Ishan Kishan is actively participating in the DY Patil T20 Cup in Mumbai. Ganguly disapproved of Kishan missing Ranji Trophy matches, emphasizing the importance of participation in such premier events.

Kishan’s Absence and Iyer’s Test Exclusion

Ishan Kishan’s absence from the national team, following his withdrawal from the South Africa Test series due to mental fatigue, has left many questioning the young player’s choices. Shreyas Iyer, having played the first two Tests in the ongoing series against England, has been excluded from the roster for the remaining three matches.

Ganguly expressed bewilderment at Kishan’s decisions, stating, “He was a part of the Indian team in all formats, Test cricket, 50-over cricket, such a big contract in IPL, so I don’t know why he has done that.”

Ganguly Praises Rohit Sharma’s Leadership

Amidst the contract termination controversy, Ganguly took a moment to commend Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. Impressed with Sharma’s performance, Ganguly said, “He’s a fantastic captain. Look at the way he captained in the World Cup, taking India to the finals.” Ganguly, who made Sharma the captain during his tenure as president, expressed confidence in Sharma’s leadership abilities.

Following a setback in Hyderabad, the Indian team, led by Sharma, has made a remarkable comeback in the England Test series, securing three consecutive victories and establishing an unassailable 3-1 lead. As India continues its winning streak, Ganguly’s endorsement of Sharma’s captaincy adds further weight to the ongoing cricketing narrative.
