Biography

After the glorious years for Indian Kabaddi under the leadership of Anup Kumar, the responsibility of captaining the Indian side was upon the shoulders of a talented and extremely successful raider, Ajay Thakur.

In 35 kg category, Ajay started playing Kabaddi at the age of 13. He got inspired from his father who was a state level wrestler and he also looked upon his brother Rakesh who had already represented India.

Words of Inspiration

The words which he couldn’t understand at that age but proved to be the most inspiring were, “Tere t-shirt ke piche 5 akshar hone chahiye or aage tiranga hona chahiye”.

His height helps him enhance his attacking style of play. His signature move is the frog jump once he scores a point. He is 1.85m tall which makes his reach one of the longest.

He was mocked by his teammates and therefore he put on 12kg in just 15 days.

Pro Kabaddi

Bengaluru Bulls and Puneri Paltan are the teams he has represented in Pro Kabaddi League.

Ajay Thakur was the fourth most successful raider in his debut VIVO Pro Kabaddi season where he played for Bengaluru Bulls.

In Season 5, when he was the captain of Tamil Thalaivas, he finished with 213 raid points.

He was a part of Indian Navy for a while and currently works with Air India as a Customer Service Supervisor.

Peter and Badal are the names of his two pet dogs. His icon is Vijender Singh and he loves to watch Boxing.

He is the recipient of Padma Shri Award.

Ajay Thakur is a true warrior who believes in fighting for victory till the end. It’s this attitude that made him a perfect fit to lead Tamil Thalaivas, when they made their debut in the league.

His calm demeanour under pressure earned him the nickname ‘Iceman’.

International Performance

During the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, he was the top raider of the tournament, scoring the most raid points. Ajay won the title of highest overall point scorer with 68 points. His best performance came in the final vs. Iran with a game-winning effort, scoring 12 raid points.

He was also the Man of the Tournament in Kabaddi World Cup 2016.
