Arshad Nadim – Pakistani Olympian

When you think of Pakistan, the first thing that might come to mind is not “ Olympia”. However, Arshad Nadeem represented Pakistan in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Here’s his story.

Story of Arshad Nadim

Arshad Nadim was born on March 3, 1968, in Lahore, Pakistan. His father was a carpenter and his mother was a housewife. He has four brothers and four sisters. Nadeem began playing cricket when he was eight years old and soon became passionate about the sport. Cricket is very popular in Pakistan and Nadeem dreamed of one day playing for the Pakistani national cricket team.

In 1988, Nadeem was offered a spot on the Pakistani national cricket team but he declined because he wanted to focus on his studies. He graduated from Punjab University with a degree in physical education andEnglish literature. After graduation, he worked as a sports coach at a Lahore school. It was during this time that Nadeem’s interest in javelin throwing began to grow.

In 1990, Nadeem competed in his first javelin throw competition and won! The following year, he won the Pakistani national championships and set a new Pakistani national record with a throw of 78.46 meters. This qualified him for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona where he finished 31st with a throw of 76.32 meters.

After the Olympics, Nadeem continued to compete internationally and also worked as a javelin throwing coach. In 2000, he helped found the Pakistan Javelin Throwers Association which works to develop young talent in Pakistan. Today, Nadeem is considered one of the best javelin throwers in Pakistani history!
