Abhinav Bindra is an Olympic athlete from India. He was born on September 28, 1982, in Dehradun, India. Bindra is a world-renowned shooter and has won numerous medals in various international competitions. In 2008, he made history by becoming the first Indian to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games. He is also a recipient of the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor.
Bindra started practicing shooting at the age of eleven. Under the guidance of his father and coach, he quickly began to show promise as a shooter. In 1999, at the age of sixteen, he became the youngest participant ever to win a gold medal at the World Championship in Sporting Rifle Shooting. The following year, he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Malaysia.
In 2008, Bindra competed in his fourth Olympic Games in Beijing. On August 11, he became the first Indian ever to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games when he won the 10 meter air rifle event. His victory was followed by a spontaneous celebration by his family and friends back home in India. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated Bindra on his “historic achievement.”
Since retiring from competitive shooting in 2016,Bindra has been involved in various businesses and startups. He is also a member of the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission. In 2019, he was appointed as chairman of the Badminton Association of India.
