In a twist that left cricket enthusiasts scratching their heads, former South African cricketing legend Jonty Rhodes has refuted claims of his recent appointment as a consultant coach for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), contradicting the official announcement made just yesterday.
The decision, unveiled in a press release by SLC on January 18, outlined Rhodes’ role as a consultant coach tasked with elevating the skills of local coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists through specialized training programs.
The press release read, “Sri Lanka Cricket decided to obtain the services of some of the best-known talents in international cricket to provide advanced training for local coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists to enhance their skills and competencies by conducting periodic training programs in selected areas.” It further stated that the Executive Committee had enlisted the expertise of Jonty Rhodes, along with former India National Team fast bowling coach Bharat Arun and ex-Sri Lanka National Team physiotherapist Alex Kountouri.
However, much to the surprise of fans and cricket aficionados, Rhodes took to his official Twitter handle a day later to express his bewilderment regarding the news.
“Hmm. This is news to me #checkyourfacts,” tweeted Rhodes.
Following additional attempts at clarification from the source that reported the news, Rhodes continued to express his surprise. Currently serving as the fielding coach for both the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL and the Durban Super Giants (DSG) in the SA20, the 54-year-old cricket icon has previously held roles with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and the Mumbai Indians (MI).
The unexpected turn of events has left the cricketing community wondering about the mix-up and eager for further developments in this unfolding story. Stay tuned for updates on Jonty Rhodes’ unexpected ‘news to me’ moment in the world of cricket coaching.
