Later, on the suggestion of Shamsul Hoque, a Physical Education Trainer from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Das switched over to athletics and began participating in short and middle distance races. Hoque introduced her to Gowri Shankar Roy of the Nagaon Sports Association. Das later qualified for inter-district competition and won two Gold medals at the sports meet.
Das caught the attention of Nipon Das, an athletics coach from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare during an inter-district competition. He asked her to shift to the state’s capital Guwahati for training. Hima Das’ parents agreed to the proposal despite their reservations. Describing her as a rare talent Nipon Das said that Hima Das’ “dedication and hard work set her apart”. She then moved accommodation near the Sarusajai Sports Complex and got enrolled to the state academy, which specialized in boxing and football. Later, a separate wing was started for athletics.
