Top 5 Moments of 2018 Commonwealth Games

In 2018, India managed to win 66 medals at the Commonwealth Games. This campaign was extremely successful.
Here we take a look at the Top 5 Moments of the 2018 CWG:

  •  Neeraj Chopra creates National Record, breaks his previous best

He created his personal best of 86.47m and also overcame his own personal best which was also an Indian Record.
Neeraj Chopra later broke this record in the 2018 Asian Games where he clinched a Gold Medal.
The only Gold Medal Indian won in Athletics was Neeraj’s Gold in Javelin Throw.

Neeraj thus became only the 5th Indian Athlete to win a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games.
He competed against the top throwers from Russia, Australia, Grenada etc.
Apart from Vipin Kasana, Neeraj was the only Indian to participate in the Javelin Throw event.

  • Sushil Kumar – Hattrick of Gold Medals

The 80 seconds finale between Sushil Kumar and South Africa’s Johannes Botha was definitely a memorable one. Sushil was so determined that he made sure he wins the match in less than 1.5 minutes.

Johannes Botha had no chance of recovery and had to settle for Silver.
This Gold Medal was special as it was his 3rd consecutive Gold at the Commonwealth Games starting from 2010.

The 2014 and 2018 Gold Medal came in the 74kg category and the 2010 Gold was in the 66kg category.

  •  All India Final – Badminton Singles

Saina and Sindhu have been the Badminton Sensation for few years now. They have performed brilliantly and have achieved almost everything.
Saina Nehwal vs PV Sindhu is the match every Badminton fan wishes to happen.
Guess what! It was the Commonwealth Games Final and it was the face off of 2 Indian Stars.

PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal were ranked 1 and 2 respectively.
The final was expected to be exciting and it didn’t disappoint.
Saina proved to be superior as she won the match with the score of 21-18 and 23-21.
Both the medals went to the Indians and thus they proved their legacy.

  •  Participated in 4 events, Medals in 4 events – Manika Batra

2018 Commonwealth Games was a dream run for Manika Batra. She received success in all the events she participated in.
2 Gold, 1 Silver and Bronze were the medals which were added to her showcase.
She created history by becoming the 1st Indian women to win a Commonwealth Individual Medal in Table Tennis.

She defeated Yu Mengyu in the final in straight 4 sets to clinch Gold. Yu Mengyu was among the top seeds and defeating her was a big achievement for Batra.
In the team event Final she defeated Feng Tianwei and added important points for the Team.
Along with Mouma Das she won Silver Medal in Women’s Doubles.
Pairing up with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, she won Bronze in the Mixed Doubles.

  • Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist at the Age of 16 – Manu Bhaker

When children are busy deciding whether to take Science or Commerce, Manu Bhaker was busy winning Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
In her maiden appearance at the CWG, she managed to surpass many greats of the game and won a Gold Medal. She won the Gold in the 10 metre air pistol event.

She scored 388 out of the 400 points possible and thus qualified for the Finals.
In the final she set a new Commonwealth Games record of 240.9.
Manu is also a 5 time World Cup Gold Medal winner.
