The Indian Tennis team arrived Kolkata for their Davis Cup World Group Qualifier rubber against Italy, scheduled to be held from February 1 & 2 in Kolkata, South Club.
This will also be the first time the new Davis Cup format will be implemented. Under the new set of rules, the tie will now consist of five best-of-three set matches and will be held over two days. 24 teams will play in the knockout qualifiers on February 1st and 2nd with 12 qualifying for the finals. These 12 will join six teams in the 18-team finals in Madrid in November 2019. Madrid has been chosen to host the first two new-format Davis Cup finals in 2019 and 2020.
India lost 4-0 in its World Group play-off tie against Serbia but made the qualifiers owing to its superior ranking in the Asia/Oceania zone. Italy ends India’s streak of three away ties the side has played over the last two years. The Indians travelled to Canada in September 2017, China and Serbia last year.
The South Club, Calcutta (which is in its centenary year) has previously hosted 14 Davis Cup ties, has a seating capacity of 3,000. Ticket prices have been kept at Rs 1,000 for general spectators and Rs 500 for club members. While 1,620 tickets will be printed for the Rs 1,000 general category, there will be 1,000 member tickets available. The last time India hosted a tie on grass was in 2016 when India played Korea in Chandigarh.
