An Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu hails from Nongpok Kakching, Manipur who participates in the 48kg weight category. Mirabai who is youngest amongst six siblings was born into a poor family. She and her brother used to walk miles to collect firewood from a hill. Mirabai used to pick heavy loads of the firewood at the age of 12. This was the time where unknowingly she was being prepared for her future. Earlier she used to play football as a sport like most of the youngsters in Manipur but she was attracted towards the weightlifting later. Chanu has won a World Championship Gold Medal at Anaheim in 2017. She also has won a silver and a gold medal at the commonwealth games in 2014 & 2018 respectively.  For her achievements in the field of sports, she was awarded fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri.
