He dreamt of being a hockey player and took steps towards it at a very early age. He started training at the Surjit Hockey Academy in his hometown and started excelling in the sport. The academy is well established and has produced many great players.
He was picked by the Ranchi Rhinos for the first ever Hockey India League. In the 2013-14 season, Mandeep scored 12 goals in 15 matches and thus had a successful campaign.
Singh won the Hockey India League’s Ponty Chadha Trophy for the Upcoming Player of the Tournament award at the end of the season.
He was also part of the 2016 Men’s Junior Hockey World Cup Team which won a Gold Medal.
After the stellar display in the league, he received a call for the national team. He played his first match as an Indian player on 18 February 2013 against Fiji in the Hockey World League.
Mandeep scored his first ever international goal on 20 February 2013 against Oman.
Up till now Mandeep has played 135 matches for India and has scored 67 goals.
Mandeep definitely considers Hockey India League to be a great opportunity for the upcoming players to get acquainted with all types of players and playing styles.
The home crowd brings in a lot of positive attitude to the team and boosts the moral of the team whenever there is lack of confidence says Mandeep.
