Curtains were drawn on the inaugural season of the Ultimate Table Tennis league, with the Falcons TTC winning the inaugural season with a 14-9 win over the Shazé Challengers at the NSCI Complex, Mumbai. The match, certainly worthy of a final was played in front of a packed audience and eminent personalities from various fields adding to the glitz and glamour of the event. Even legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan was seen enjoying the fantastic Table Tennis on display.
The heroes for the Falcons were yet again their seasoned campaigners Wu Yang and Sanil Shetty. Sanil started the tie by pulling a game of the much higher ranked Li Ping of the Challengers. But the match which turned the tie on its head was the mixed doubles which Sanil Shetty and Lee Ho Ching won in straight games against the Challengers combo of Petrissa Solja and Soumyajeet Ghosh. The coordination between the Falcons pair was amazing and its hard to believe that they have been playing mixed doubles together just for a couple of weeks.
Falcons raced to a 13-5 lead before the Challengers pulled 4 games on a trot making it a close contest. But just when a miraculous comeback seemed the order of the day, Falcons captain Par Gerell won that decisive game that gave them the trophy and sparked lots of celebrations in the Falcons camp. The MVP awards for the season were deservingly won by Wu Yang and Liam Pitchford both from the Falcons.
So, this 18 day Table Tennis extravaganza finally came to an end, but left behind so many exciting memories and moments, that everyone will be eagerly waiting for the second season!
