On 7th March 2020 exactly 2 months ago, India achieved a feat they never did before. The Indian Team qualified for the Playoffs for the 1st time ever in the Fed Cup; thanks to the brilliance of Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina.
The preliminary round consists of 6 teams competing against each other. India went on to win the last 4 matches as it eventually lost to the Chinese team in the 1st match who later went on to became the unbeaten team in the league stage.
The last tie against Indonesia was absolutely a thriller which went on till the deciding match. In the opening match Rutuja Bhosale lost to a 16 year old Priska Madelyn Nugroho with the score line of 3-6, 6-0, 3-6 which lasted for more than 100 minutes.
Despite losing two previous singles, Ankita Raina bounced back and defeated Aldila Sutjiadi, with a comfortable score of 6-3 and 6-3.
The doubles was the deciding match of the tie. Ankita Raina partnered with Sania Mirza to defeat Sutziyadi and Nugroho with the score board showing 7-6(4), 6-0 and made sure India qualify for the play – offs for the 1st time ever.
The happiness and satisfaction on the faces of the Indian Players showed the worth of this win and paved a path towards the bright future of Indian Tennis.
